Boasting a thriving community centre it operates totally on the notion of community spirit, involvement, participation and investment. Our most valuable resource are the people from our area. To have families, elderly people and working people involved in the centre is essential and most appreciated. Located at 18 – 20 Kitchener Road. http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/council/services/venues/sandringham.asp
The building was erected around 1929. It started off as a dairy with an attached house. Early in its life, it was owned by the Graham family. In 1951 it was owned by Ray and Mila Callandar and run as an IGA food store. In 1958 the shopfront was altered. Around this time it was knownas Oustons Food Store Ltd. In 1980 it was bought by the Mt Albert Borough Council for $30,500 from AJC Riches, an engineer, for use as two halls for hire. In 1981 Marion Whaley suggested that only one hall be created and that the back part of the building be used as a drop-in centre for the community. The front part of the building was modified to form the Sandringham Community Hall, which was operated separately from the Community House. The Community House was accessed by the side door and the facilities included a lounge, two smaller rooms, a kitchen, bathroom and a laundry. There was a garage for storage and a large, unfenced outdoor area. This outdoor area was designed as parking to comply with hall regulations. Therefore, the use of this land for a play ground was "at Council's pleasure." |
